Bourbon Trail Run

Do you enjoy the smoothness of a fine Kentucky Bourbon?

Do you feel kinda funny when you hear the words “Maker’s Mark,” “Woodford Reserve” or “Pappy van Winkle”?

Do you like the company of thoroughbred horses?

Do you like the sound that a train makes as it comes up to speed…clickety clack, clickety clack?

Do you like to ride?

If your answer to any of these questions was "yes," then this may be the ride for you.

We’ll leave Fessler’s Lane at 8 a.m. on the morning of Friday, May 29 (please have breakfast on your own) and tour North through the best that Northern Middle Tennessee and Kentucky Bourbon Territory has to offer.  After stopping for lunch, we’ll arrive at Historic Maker’s Mark Distillery between 2 and 3 p.m. for a private guided tour. For a small fee you may even elect to dip your own bottle of Maker’s in the famous red wax, making the visit that much more memorable.  This is a remarkable tour,  you will learn a great deal of the history of the Bourbon Industry in America…you’ll even know such critical details as the difference between “Whiskey” and “Whisky”, and why Pappy van Winkle is so revered.

We’ll then take a short ride to Bardstown, Ky. (The Bourbon Capital of the World) where we will check in to our hotel for both nights, The Days Inn.  Within easy walking distance is Bardstown Square, where the action is, with lots of places to eat and enjoy vast selections of the local spirit…you guessed it, BOURBON Whiskey, or is it Whisky?  Hmmmm.

The most interesting eatery with great local flair and history is The Old Talbott Tavern, with a fine menu and adjoining Bourbon Bar.

Saturday, May 30 will begin at 9 a.m., please have breakfast on your own.

We’ll spend the day riding the beautiful Bluegrass area of Kentucky Horse Country, with stops at Woodford Reserve, Four Roses and a tour of a working Kentucky Thoroughbred Horse Farm.

We should be back at the Days Inn no later than 4 p.m. because the Old Kentucky Dinner Train leaves the station at 5 p.m.. This promises to be quite an experience as we ride a beautifully restored 1940’s style train through Bourbon Country all the while enjoying a gourmet dinner during the 2 ½ hour excursion (see note below regarding dress code and reservations).  Best of all, our hotel is directly across the street from the train station…what a coincidence!  If the train is not your cup of tea, have a swim in the pool and do the square again. Either way, it promises to be a great day.

Sunday, May 31, the Ride Home.

Typically a high-speed jaunt on the Interstate, the ride home is the least favorite of most of these rides. The choice is up to each rider. There will be options of 3 to 4 hours of Interstate riding, or 5 to 6 hours of backroad touring. Our first rest stop will be the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. Either way, it promises to be a great weekend, that’s for sure.

Reservations at The Days Inn, The Old Talbott Tavern and My Old Kentucky Dinner Train must be made as soon as possible and by each participant.

MCC'S RIDE POLICY REGARDING THE WEATHER
How do we determine "go" or "no go" on a potentially weather-affected ride?
We call it the 50/50 rule*. According to the WEATHER CHANNEL, if the high temperature is 50 degrees or less, OR there is a 50% chance of rain or more, the ride is cancelled.**

The decision is at the discretion (and direction!) of the Road Captains in charge of the ride.

*("40/40 rule" applies during Standard Time, ie, Fall & Winter. We change to 50/50 rule during Daylight Savings Time, ie, Spring & Summer)

*Check for the most up-to-date changes in activities and events:Call the Ride Line  @ 615-242-6067 ext. 8 or MCC Forum Events Update Page
